Think about life insurance before going to high-risk countries

Date: Thu, 15 Dec 2005

Holidaymakers planning a trip to an exotic or high-risk country are advised to ensure their have adequate life insurance cover before jetting off.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has recently issued a warning to travellers that they should ensure they take the necessary precautions before visiting countries that are highly malarious.

In particular, holidaymakers are being urged to make sure they take the appropriate anti-malarial medication especially following the recent rise in Brits dying from the disease.

It is estimated that almost 2,000 cases of malaria are reported in returning UK travellers each year, resulting in the death of one in 100 people. Therefore, taking out life insurance could help to ease loved ones' immediate financial worries if the worst should happen.

"Ensuring adequate protection against malaria requires prior planning, and tourists thinking of booking holidays at short notice need to take this into consideration," said
Professor Peter Chiodini, a malaria expert at the HPA.

He added: "Holidaymakers and people returning to their country of origin to visit friends or family should always seek pre-travel medical advice on which anti-malarial medications are appropriate for their destination."
