Take out life insurance before hitting the slopes

Date: Fri, 16 Dec 2005

UK residents are being urged to take out life insurance policies before going on their skiing holidays this Christmas.

New research by Halifax found that winter sports enthusiasts could be at risk from a new breed of binge drinking skiers and snowboarders.

The survey revealed that male and female skiers drink an average of 100 and 71 units of alcohol a week respectively while on the piste, considerably more than the government's recommended maximum of 28 units for men and 21 for women.

A life insurance policy may the best option as over half of skiers admitted that drinking was a part of the whole skiing experience, with a further five per cent revealing their excessive drinking had led to another person suffering an injury.

Vicky Emmott, senior underwriter at Halifax, said: "Our research shows that some skiers even admit to injuring others while under the influence of alcohol or recovering from a heavy night.

"It's important that people remember to limit their drinking to sensible levels while enjoying the winter sports holidays."

Austria was found to be the drinkers' favourite ski destination, with an average of 114 units of alcohol being drunk every week per person.
