Sustainable developments drive green mortgage market

Date: Wed, 02 Nov 2005

The growing support for sustainable developments could help to drive the green mortgage market.

Projects such as the Devon Sustainable Building Initiative (DSBI) are keen to encourage communities that are sustainable and make use of green technology when building new properties, reports the Midweek Herald.

The move within the industry towards eco-friendly housing projects should also help boost demand for green mortgages.

The DSBI are hoping that their latest project will showcase the benefits of adopting a green approach to new housing developments.

"The developers are holding workshops with interested parties to develop a sustainable plan and they are doing really well," said DSBI's director Gareth Walton.

He added: "You hear from the general public and industry that sustainable development cannot be done because it is too expensive or is not feasible yet. It does not cost an arm and a leg to build in a sustainable way."
