Smokers should take out life insurance

Date: Thu, 09 Feb 2006

Smokers should consider taking out life insurance if they are unable to kick the habit especially if they smoke low tar brands.

New research published in The Lancet has raised concerns that the tobacco industry may have misled the general public over the actual damage caused by long-term smoking.

It is alleged that British American Tobacco (BAT) developed a range of cigarettes which actually produced low amounts of nicotine and tar under standard testing protocols but deliver increased yields to smokers.

David Hammond and a number of scientists form the University of Waterloo in Canada believe they have discovered evidence that shows BAT developed the strategy to help boost sales of its "health-conscious" low tar products.

Professor Hammond said: "Overall, these documents depict a deliberate strategy whereby BAT designed products that would fool their consumers and regulators into thinking these products were safer or less hazardous when they were not."

Long-term smokers are advised to double-check they have adequate life insurance and are fully covered against the development of smoker-related diseases.
