More mortgage holders sprucing up the garden

Date: Wed, 13 Apr 2005

More homeowners are planning to make improvements to their gardens over the coming months, according to a survey by Standard Life.

The study estimates that 94 per cent of households are planning to spend money on revamping their gardens, with thirteen per cent planning to spend around £4,000 on outdoor projects.

A large proportion of the money will be spent on lightening and barbeque facilities to create the impression that the garden provides "an extra room" to the home, with 50 per cent of gardeners saying that the possibility of adding value to property was the main reason for the upgrades.

"It is fantastic to see so many people wanting to add money to their properties," said Andrew Boddie, Head of Marketing at Standard Life Bank.

The influence of the Good Life and Hugh Fernley-Whittingstall also remains positive with 39 per cent of respondents growing their own fruit and vegetables.
