A new study reveals that families are more likely to have pet cover rather than other insurance products such as life or accident protection.
Research from Combined Insurance reveals that 23 per cent of self-employed Brits have pet insurance cover but just 28 per cent have some form of other cover, including life insurance.
It is estimated that around four million people in the UK are self-employed. Around 30 per cent of such workers have no savings despite their higher financial commitments.
"In a country where approximately one in five workers are self employed, it is a concern that so many are more likely to financially protect their pets than they are themselves or their families," said Nigel Brittle from Combined Insurance.
"For little more than the price of an average weekly take-away meal, people could have the peace of mind knowing that if the worst should happen, they and their family are able to make ends meet," he added.
