Landlords need to ensure they have appropriate insurance to cover any damage caused by flooding.
Members of the Association of British Insurers (ABI) are hoping that around 100,000 household in the UK could benefit from flood insurance being available in areas where the potential flood risk is adequately managed.
Landlords in such areas are being advised to consider flood insurance if current flood defences improvements will be completed within five years. The cover could mean that landlords will able to pay for any repairs caused by water damage to property, especially as climate change could mean more high level and flash flooding in the UK.
"The governments commitment to effective management of flood risk is very welcome, and enables our members to continue flood cover for almost all households and businesses at risk of flooding," said Stephen Haddrill, the ABIs director general.
"However, we expect climate change to dramatically increase the flood risk, so continued improvements on the ground are vital. For flood insurance to remain widely available, the government must make further progress in reducing the flood risk in vulnerable communities throughout the country," he added.
