High stress levels supports need for critical illness cover

Date: Mon, 05 Dec 2005

Increased stress levels among the UK's business community is highlighting the need for entrepreneurs to consider critical illness cover.

A new survey from the Royal Bank of Scotland (RSB) shows that the country's entrepreneurs and business leaders spend around 17 hours per week away from work thinking about their business – pushing up stress levels and increasing the chances of developing illness.

There has also been an increase in working hours for many SME owners, with 56 per cent working more than 50 hours per week, 28 per cent work more than 61 hours per week and 15 per cent work more than 70 hours.

However, entrepreneurs could help reduce long-term stress levels by applying for critical illness cover which could help to lessen financial burdens if they should develop an illness which forces them to spend time away from the workplace.

"Our survey confirms the prime motivator for Britain’s entrepreneurs is being their own boss, and the clear sense of fulfilment this brings," said Steve Richards, head of RBS business marketing.

"However, it also highlights the potential issue of long working hours and increased worry caused by the day to day running of a business," he added.
