The changing nature of health means that many insurers are having to offer consumers a wide variety of life protection policies.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) is hoping that a working group on HIV will inform the industry how to develop polices which deal with the risk of HIV and Aids.
The initiative is aimed at bringing together a number of leading figures and experts to ensure that the industry can respond to people's concerns about life insurance protection.
"Insurance has an important part to play in assessing the risks associated with HIV and Aids, and the industry has a duty to research and explain these risks to consumers," said Professor Donald Jeffries, chairman of the ABIs expert working group on HIV.
He added: "Insurance companies can also work with healthcare professionals and others to provide information about how to minimise these risks."
