Even the healthiest need life insurance

Date: Thu, 24 Nov 2005

Four in ten people think that those who do not look after their own health should have limited access to treatment but healthy patients are being advised to ensure they protect their own health by taking out life insurance.

A new study from BUPA suggests that many people believe that those who smoke or are overweight should be forced to partly pay for treatment provided by the NHS but it is key to remember that unexpected health problems can strike even the fittest members of society.

Many participants in the survey felt that the government should do more to help improve the nation's health levels, however, the initiative of obtaining life insurance could go some way to helping relatives if the worst should happen.

"We were particularly surprised that people have taken such a hard-line view on self-inflicted illnesses, with so many saying they should not be treated at all. Perhaps this shows a change in public mood and that compassionate Brits are a thing of the past?," said Dr Andrew Vallance-Owen, BUPA group medical director.

He added: "However, there is clear evidence from this study to support the view that individuals feel they should be accountable for their own health and well-being. But the health of a nation can't be achieved in isolation.
