Many consumers not only leave Christmas shopping to the last minute but also delay making crucial financial decisions on budgeting and life insurance cover.
It is expected that the last few days before Christmas will see millions of shoppers hunting for last-minute gifts because they have failed to adequately plan ahead and Sainsbury's Bank believe the same approach often applies to making important financial choices.
The bank estimates that last minute credit card spending will reach around £1.82 billion, but many consumers will not be able to make the repayments come January because they have failed to budget adequately.
"Credit cards provide a convenient way in which to do your Christmas shopping but if you are unsure whether you will be able to clear your balance in January, you may be better off spreading the cost with a card that offers an introductory rate of 0 per cent APR on purchases," said Donald MacLeod, credit card manager, Sainsburys Bank.
Consumers are being advised to make sure they are not pressured in to spending too much during the festive period and instead make wise financial decisions to ensure they have adequate life insurance cover something that will provide a long-term benefit to loved ones.
