Critical illness cover can play a role in healthy finances

Date: Wed, 07 Dec 2005

Critical illness cover could help many people keep their debt levels under control alongside advice from the Citizens Advice Service.

A new government initiative could enable Citizens Advice and the Association of British Credit Unions (ABCUL) to offer money advice provision in deprived areas of the UK.

It is hoped that the Financial Inclusion Fund will support the appointment of 15 full-time staff members who will provide free one-on-one debt advice to customers of members of ABCUL, who are struggling to budget adequately or have fallen behind on their repayments.

"Working closely with ABCUL in this way is an exciting opportunity to reach people in real need who would not normally seek mainstream debt advice," said Citizens Advice director of policy Teresa Perchard.

She added: "They will be able to combine the benefits of free, impartial and expert money advice with the budgeting, bill payment and other services offered through credit unions to get their debt under control."
