Critical illness cover a good bet for same sex couples

Date: Tue, 06 Dec 2005

The new Civil Partnership law could lead to an increase in critical illness cover purchases by same sex couples.

The new legislation means that same sex couples are entitled to similar legal benefits and tax rights as married heterosexual couples and therefore will be recognised as the partner's next-of-kin.

These changes will include a number of areas including entitlements to pensions, inheritance and tax credits and is likely to encourage more couples to consider critical illness to protect against possible long-term financial problems if one of them becomes unwell.

The Citizens Advice is launching a new fact sheet to ensure that anyone considering a civil partnership is fully aware of the new rights and obligations.

Citizens Advice head of public information Liz Seward said: "At long last same-sex couples are getting recognition for their relationships in the eyes of the law. It will mean far-reaching changes to the rights of same-sex couples, giving them the same legal benefits and tax advantages as married couples."

"However, we can not stress enough how important it is that same-sex couples are aware of what these changes will mean," she added.
