A national survey of lifestyle trends has shown that making plans in the event of critical injury would be essential for British consumers.
Research undertaken by Alliance & Leicester indicates that we are increasingly turning away from professionals when it comes to personal advice.
Only six in ten of us now seek out a doctor for medical concerns, with almost 18 million UK adults reliant on the wisdom of partners and parents.
This is especially apparent among the younger generation: just 34 per cent of 18-29-year-olds make the doctor their main port of call, and many prefer to take guidance from the internet.
The results show consumer response to longer working patterns and greater time pressure, when few doctors' surgeries are able to open outside daytime hours.
But because we can never predict when difficult times lie ahead, making preparations for critical injury would be a crucial way to cover for stress, neglect and uncertainty.
