BikeSafe is an initiative run by a number of UK police forces and aims to improve drivers' knowledge, skills and experience, therefore increasing the number of competent riders on the road.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is hoping to use the forthcoming North West 200 races to help promote the initiative and raise awareness of how riding safely can reduce accidents.
"Thousands of people regularly enjoy the thrill and freedom of a motorcycle, scooter or moped," said BikeSafe co-ordinator, Constable Stevie Nugent.
"Sadly our figures show that the number of deaths and serious injuries is rising. BikeSafe is aimed at all bikers ranging from the novice to the experienced cyclists"
A number of insurance companies already offer a discount for riders who have gained a biker safety awareness certificate through the scheme.
