Young Drivers should admit speeding fines

Mon, 10 Apr 2006

Young Drivers are being warned not to attempt to avoid paying speeding or traffic fines by using false details or fake addresses.

New figures show that many motorists believe they can avoid paying for their poor driving by simply providing false details or even postbox addresses because they think the police will not spend time tracing their real information.

However, a new report from the RAC Foundation shows that the increasing use of high-tech devices such as advanced cameras will mean that repeat offenders will be automatically traced.

The new cameras are capable of reading number plates and comparing them to a database of vehicles with outstanding fines or other motoring offences. The driver could then find themselves being stopped by traffic police.

RAC director Edmund King explained: "Police can chase people up but post box addresses make it more difficult. They see someone has for example ten outstanding fines and it is either a made-up name or a post box account and it takes more resources to follow up."

However, he added: "The way these people will eventually get caught is if police are using automatic number plate recognition cameras."

Young Drivers are being warned that they could invalidate their Car Insurance if they fail to provide a correct address.
