Inexperienced motorists or Young Drivers who have taken a break from the road could be causing Car Insurance costs to rise.
Research by insurance provider Zurich discovered that drivers who take a break from driving and then return to the road could be responsible for around 334,000 car accidents each year.
Many Young Drivers take a break after passing their test because they go off to university, where a car is not often needed. However, their inexperience could be adding to Car Insurance premiums, especially as each accident costs around £652 in repairs.
One solution could be to ensure that out-of-practice drivers are subjected to a refresher course of lessons, especially if they have not been behind the wheel for more than a year.
Maria Wyatt from Zurich said such measures could help improve road safety and keep premiums low.
"One suggestion is to incorporate a refresher test in to the Road Safety Bill," she added.
"This could positively address and change the issue of the dangers posed by lapsed drivers."
