Young Drivers likely to car share

Tue, 21 Mar 2006

Young Drivers are likely to consider car sharing following government plans to introduce new anti-congestion schemes.

Privilege Insurance estimates that one in five drivers are now likely to share their daily commute after the introduction of car sharing lanes on the UK's motorways.

Nearly half of motorists are in favour of the new initiatives that will see car pool lanes in place on high volume roads, compared to just 24 per cent who are opposed to their introduction.

It is also hoped that the car sharing lanes could encourage many more Young Drivers to develop safer road habits as well as reducing pollution levels on UK roads.

Ian Parker, managing director of Privilege Insurance, said: "Privilege's research demonstrates the potential road safety benefits of car sharing and highlights the support car sharing enjoys among many drivers."

He added: "If car pooling or sharing journeys encourages safer driving, then that should be sufficient justification to prompt drivers and the government into rethinking their car use habits."
