Young Drivers could help congestion by sharing

Mon, 13 Mar 2006

Young Drivers could help to reduce congestion by car sharing with friends and work colleagues.

Growing levels of traffic jams on UK roads has lead to the creation of a new motorway scheme that will aim to encourage more drivers to consider carrying another passenger. It is hoped that the plans will also help lower pollution and reduce motoring costs.

The expansion of the M1 motorway is to include a fourth lane that will only allow peak-time access to those drivers who are carrying at least two other people in the vehicle.

Transport secretary, Alistair Darling, believes that the scheme will help to combat estimates that road congestion levels are set to rise by around 20 per cent over the next four years.

He said: "Car pool lanes have an important role to play in making best use of road space, as well as helping the environment and reducing congestion. They work in the US and there is no reason they can’t work here."

Young Drivers who carry passengers could also avoid paying a toll on the M6, if current plans to approve the creation of a single-person road pricing system are given the green light.
