Women should demand Car Insurance equality

Thu, 24 Nov 2005

Women should demand Car Insurance equality and not be subjected to higher car costs.

An undercover operation by consumer magazine Which Car? discovered that many car dealers are charging female drivers more for cars than their male counterparts.

The study concluded that women were quoted up to £1,800 more to buy a range of vehicles including a BMW 320i, Ford Focus 1.6, Nissan X-Trail 2.2 dCi, Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 and Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet 1.6.

The majority of car dealer showroom staff were unhappy to cut prices for female buyers, but more than four-fifths were willing to negotiate on price with male customers.

"Women are getting a raw deal when buying a new car. They pay more and feel under more pressure to buy than men," said David Motton, the editor of What Car?

Neil Greig, of the AA Motoring Trust, added that women should do their research before heading to the dealership and resist being pressured into accepting an uncompetitive deal.

Female drivers are also being encouraged to ensure that they shop around for Car Insurance cover and are not forced to pay over the odds for inferior policies.
