The introduction of reduced speeding limits could help to reduce Car Insurance premiums.
Environmental campaigns have called on the government to crack down on speeding to help reduce the UK's carbon emissions but it could also help to reduce insurance costs for many motorists.
A national reduction on the speeding limit could mean that UK roads would be safer, although there are concerns that many drivers could find themselves with more points on their license.
However, transport secretary Alistair Darling has dismissed reports that the government would consider lowing speeding targets as a way of reducing greenhouse gases.
Speaking on BBC Radio Four's Today programme he stressed that speed limits would not be decided purely on environmental reasons.
"The reason that we have these speed limits is because of road safety; that's what they're there for. As I've said before, if the speed limit's say 70 you shouldn't break the law," said the minister.
