Some Car Insurance providers are to continue to offer "Driving Other Cars" (DOC) cover.
Many insurance companies are removing this cover because they believe it is being abused by some consumers and could undermine government plans to crackdown on those who drive uninsured.
However, providers such as Direct Line and the AA are planning to keep the DOC in place, although they are keen to ensure that customers only use it in emergency situations.
Legally DOC should only be used in cases of emergency and it only provides basic third party cover. Some providers have also expressed concerns that completely removing DOC could mean that more people may unknowingly drive uninsured and lead to some people being forced to break the law in emergency circumstances.
"Direct Line are not prepared to leave its law abiding customers high and dry just because of a few untrustworthy motorists," said Emma Holyer, motor spokesperson for Direct Line.
"If these specific few motorists are causing this problem insurers should think about specific underwriting rules rather than removing the cover for all motorists."
