'Solid and sedate' best for Car Insurance

Mon, 12 Dec 2005

The less flashy and more sedate a vehicle you drive could help to lower insurance premiums.

A US-based website, www.AutoInsurancePlanners.com, is hoping to educate drivers on how the car they drive can lower or increase their insurance costs.

Motor Insurance companies consider a number of factors when determining how much cover will cost, including age, driving history and location, but it also appears that many providers are also assessing the stability of the insured car.

Using claims data and information collected by industry rating organizations, insurers determine which cars are likely to be stolen, as well as assessing repair costs and safety ratings.

Some insurance companies may consider raising excesses on cars which have expensive body construction or have poor safety records. US insurance companies are likely to also refer to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tests which assess the "crashworthiness" of vehicles.

Therefore, choosing a vehicle that is less likely to attract the attention of car thieves and is easy to repair could help to lower overall insurance premium prices for many drivers.
