Police clampdown could lower Car Insurance costs

Tue, 08 Nov 2005

Police forces in the UK have been given increased powers to deal with motorists who drive despite being uninsured.

From the today, the police will be able to utilise number recognition cameras in order to track down cars that are not insured.

Through a connection to a national database, the cameras will eventually help police locate offending vehicles and remove or destroy them.

It is estimated that each motorist in Britain pays an extra £30 annually on their premiums as a result of uninsured drivers.

Transport secretary Alistair Darling said: "On top of these powers we are creating a new offence of keeping a vehicle without insurance.

"This will be enforced through a new database of insurance details, which means that uninsured drivers don't even need to be on the road to be caught."
