Petrol prices could hit Young Drivers

Tue, 04 Apr 2006

The rising cost of petrol is set to undermine any savings made by Young Drivers shopping around for the best Car Insurance deals.

The AA estimate that the cost of driving an average petrol car has dropped by just over half a penny per mile despite greater fuel efficiency, improved reliability and competition within the insurance sector.

Young Drivers could soon be forced to walk if petrol rises by a further five pence as the AA estimate such an increase could make driving too expensive for many UK motorists.

"Once again technological advances have come to the rescue of the hard-pressed motorist, who last year saw the cost of motoring leap on average three pence per mile," said Ruth Bridger, motoring cost specialist for the AA Motoring Trust.

She added: "However, another Katrina-like surge in crude oil prices could undo all the good work."

Young Drivers are advised to consider looking at ways of reducing their motoring costs by carrying out their own basic repairs, driving within the speed limit or opting for the most carbon dioxide-efficient car they can afford.
