The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has warned Northern Ireland consumers to ensure their car dealer complies with distance selling legislation.
OFT has published new guidelines to provide guidance for car dealers on how to obey with current distance selling legislation.
Car retailers such as those who operate online need to comply with Distance Selling Regulations (DSRs) and the rules apply to both new and second-hand car sellers.
Penny Boys, OFT's executive director, said: "A car is an expensive purchase. It is important that people who buy one by distance means get the full benefit of the additional protection of the DSRs. This guidance will help ensure that they do."
Consumers are also being urged to remember to purchase insurance for their vehicle when buying a new car over the telephone or online.
