Growing motoring costs hit Young Drivers

Thu, 16 Mar 2006

Over a third of drivers are reducing their general car usage following a rise in fuel costs, claims new research.

A study by insurer MORE TH>N discovered that 36 per cent of British car owners made fewer car journeys over the past year as the price of fuel rose by 11 per cent.

In particular, Young Drivers could find the growing cost of filling up starting to take its toll on bank balances.

Eight out of ten of the 1,526 motorists questioned raised concerns over the possibility of future fuel price increases and 22 per cent admitted they would have to consider giving up their cars if petrol rose to more than £1 a litre.

David Pitt, head of Car Insurance for MORE TH>N, believes that fuel prices are having an impact on general car usage.

"Rising fuel prices are having a real impact on motorists’ behaviour, to the extent that a significant number have already cut back on the number of journeys they make," said Mr Pitt.

"If prices continue to escalate, motorists will tighten their purse-strings even further and we will no doubt see more considering different means of transport."
