The government is looking likely to reduce the number of car thefts by around 30 per cent but drivers still need to ensure they take out sufficient Car Insurance cover.
A new report from the public accounts select committee (PAC) has confirmed that car thefts figures have fallen by nearly a third over the past five years due to increased co-operation within the motor industry as well as through a series of police incentives.
However, the report has expressed concern that the number of thefts from car parks remains above acceptable levels and is calling on the government to encourage the adoption of advanced security.
"About a fifth of all car crime happens in car parks so it is very disappointing that only a small proportion of public bodies across the country have managed to establish secure car parks," said chairman of the committee Edward Leigh.
Mr Leigh added: "Vehicle security has undoubtedly improved but too often the industry has to be pressured into adopting new measures. The home office must work closely with car manufacturers to ensure that technological advances in security are translated into practical new measures to foil car thieves."
