First time drivers advised to consider Car Insurance costs

Thu, 13 Oct 2005

First time drivers are being advised to consider the cost of insurance when purchasing their first vehicle.

More and more people are choosing to delay taking their driving test but this also means that they first car is less likely to be a hand-me-down or an old banger. However, this also means that Car Insurance premiums could prove costly.

"We’ve seen that first time drivers are getting older, and that they are more likely to buy newer cars once they get on the ladder," said David Pitt, head of insurance at More Than.

"Cars are not only more affordable these days, but first time car buyers seem to be more image conscious and want the latest makes and models compared to a decade or so ago, when first time cars were often ‘old bangers’," he added.

Insurance costs for new drivers can often exceed £1,000 especially as more than a third of new motorists chose to buy a new or nearly new car. Inexperienced drivers are being advised to build up no claims discounts as soon as possible in order to lower costs.
