Drivers need to be more responsible and that includes Car Insurance

Tue, 24 Jan 2006

Drivers need to ensure they fasten their seatbelts and have adequate Car Insurance.

A new survey, conducted by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), estimates that nearly a third of motorist are guilty of not wearing their seatbelts whilst behind the wheel. Drivers in London were most likely to drive without a correctly fastened belt, whilst motorists in the north-east were the most safety conscious.

The research forms part of a new initiative aimed at encouraging safer driving on UK roads in order to reduce accidents.

SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan is hoping the results will convince drivers they need to take more responsibility for their own actions and become safer motorists – a move that could also help them lower their Car Insurance premium costs.

"Simple steps like reading the Highway Code, taking time to fit a child seat properly and checking tyres regularly could prevent many people from needlessly coming to harm on the roads," said Mr Macgowan.

He added: "Yet millions of motorists are guilty of taking safety for granted. The motor industry has a responsibility to drive this message home and every motorist should make it a 2006 resolution to do their bit."
