Don't be misled by Car Insurance ads

Mon, 07 Nov 2005

Consumers are often mislead by Car Insurance advertisements, reports a new survey.

A poll from Moneyfacts.co.uk suggests that 55 per cent of consumers believe they were mislead by an advert for financial services products such as Car Insurance despite regulatory guidelines.

In particular, people feel that headline claims on such adverts are often inaccurate because they fail to reveal that only certain qualifying customers will be entitled to the special offer or low interest rate.

"The whole idea of an advert is to lure in new customers. However, there are rules in place that are supposed to stop consumers being mis-sold financial products through adverts not containing the correct information or by simply promoting headline rates for which most consumers would not qualify," said Emma Butler, Moneyfacts.co.uk editor.

Consumers are advised to ensure that they double-check the small print on advertisements before applying for the product or service and obtain a number of other quotes to ensure they are receiving the most competitive offer available.
