Despite safety improvements Car Insurance a must

Tue, 06 Dec 2005

In recent years there has been significant improvements in motor safety but drivers must still ensure that their Car Insurance policies are up-to-date.

Insurance provider Thatcham has confirmed that many car designers have introduced ways of ensuring improved seat and headrest support to protect drivers in accidents.

The latest tests, conducted on behalf of the International Insurance Whiplash Prevention Group (IIWPG), show that many leading brands including Mercedes, Hyundai, Renault and Saab have sought to improve safety for motorists.

Automaker Volvo was awarded the top position in the safety tests and has been praised for its supportive seats which use a fixed head restraint position to ensure they are always in the most appropriate position. Volvo have also developed the Volvo Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS) that allows the backrest to absorb the full impact of a rear-end collision.

Matthew Avery, crash laboratory manager with Thatcham said: "Volvo has shown a continuing commitment to safety, and their seats once again performed very well in our tests."

He added: "This is supported by real world injury data which confirms that these seats do produce a significant reduction in whiplash injuries - Volvo continues to be the trend setter in this area."
