Crackdown in Car Insurance dodging hotspot

Thu, 10 Nov 2005

A new incentive in Bradford is hoping to reduce the number of people driving without valid Car Insurance cover.

The crackdown, a joint scheme between West Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and the West Midlands police forces, will use information supplied by the
Motor Insurers' Information Centre (MIIC) and as well as the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

Vehicles will be scanned using Automatic Number Plate Recognition and then checked against a list of insured cars.

Chief Inspector Gary Parker, of the West Yorkshire force, said: "This operation is not about targeting law abiding motorists but catching common criminals.

"By removing illegal and abandoned vehicles we are not only preventing them from being taken and used as a tool to commit crime, but we are also going a long way towards protecting the safety of other drivers, cyclists and pedestrians."

Around two million vehicles in the UK are on the road despite their drivers not holding any valid form of Car Insurance and it is estimated that accidents involving uninsured drivers add an extra £30 to the insurance premiums of law-abiding motorists each year.
