Car Insurance providers could soon directly provide medical treatment for those policyholders injured in a motor accident.
Companies such as Norwich Union have already begun developing pilot clinics to treat soft tissue conditions such as whiplash and the specialist clinics could eventually offer a whole range of treatment to customers. The insurers hope that providing direct medical service will eventually reduce the number of accident claims and lower medical and legal overheads.
However, some concerns have already been raised that the initiative could lead to a conflict of interest for many Car Insurance firms, who are keen to lower costs and increase profitability.
"Rehabilitation has to be done for the good of the patient and not for the good of the insurer," said Jennie Walsh of the UK's largest personal-injury law firm, Thompsons Solicitors.
"How do we know that what happens in rehab, the medical reports and all, are not being manipulated or led by the insurer's demands?" she added.
