Car Insurance defaulters tracked with Gatso 2

Wed, 16 Nov 2005

Drivers who fail to have Car Insurance cover could be tracked with a new version of Gatso technology.

A leaked document to the Times suggests that the Association of Chief Police Offers (ACPO) could be considering the development of a 24-7 national vehicle movement database.

The system would be capable of monitoring ever vehicle on the UK roads using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and could be used to track down criminals as well as catching uninsured motorists by checking number plates against a list of insured vehicles. It is estimated that insured road users add around £30 to the premiums of law-abiding drivers.

According to ACPO roads policing head Meredydd Hughes, the technology could eventually be installed every 400 yards along motorways as well as in car parks and shopping centres.

However, some civil liberty groups have raised concerns over the technology claiming that it could be open to misuse especially as data collected by the system is automatically stored for two years.
