Car Insurance provider highlights dangerous driving

Mon, 17 Oct 2005

Over 12 per cent of motorists break the law every time they drive on UK roads, according to a new survey.

Churchill Car Insurance has revealed that many drivers break the speed limit and drive dangerously on a regular basis, with a further 24 per cent of people admitting they always break the speed limit whilst driving on a motorway.

The research, based on answers from 2,026 drivers, showed that speeding bans or fines do not work as a deterrent against dangerous driving, with 80 per cent of convicted speeders admitting they have not changed their motoring behaviour.

"With today's busy lifestyles, it can be easy to fall into bad driving habits and let speeding become the norm," said Darren McCauley, head of Car Insurance at Churchill.

"Speeding doesn't carry the same social taboo as drink driving, but can have serious consequences. More drivers need to be more aware that speeding is not simply a minor offence, but instead a major cause of road fatalities," he added.

The research also highlighted that 21 per cent of drivers believe the current national speed limits are too low, with nine per cent admitting they are not aware of what the current legal speed limits are.
