Car Insurance provider supports crackdown

Wed, 05 Oct 2005

A leading Car Insurance provider is welcoming the news that the government is planning to crack down on uninsured drivers.

Saga, which provides insurance to the over 50s, believes that the proposed change in legislation will mean that older drivers will no longer have to subsidise those who drive without a valid insurance policy.

The new rules mean that uninsured drivers could face an automatic fine if they own a car which does not have valid insurance but has not be declared as legally off the road.

It is hoped that using details provided by insurance companies alongside the list of registered vehicles will help to track down those who are drive illegally on UK roads.

"We welcome this change in the law, paying for uninsured drivers is a burden for all honest road users, but it is particularly unfair for drivers aged fifty and over. The cost of uninsured drivers ought to be fairly apportioned so that older drivers pay less," said Paul Green of Saga.

It is estimated that uninsured drivers cost insurers around £500 million each year, meaning that legally insured motorists have to pay an extra £30 on their premiums to cover this cost.
