Icebreaker Ideas

If you’re having trouble getting the party started, here are a few great ideas to break the ice and get people around to your way of thinking!

  • Have an exciting repertoire of Drinking Games prepared
Teach people a brand new drinking game – this will inspire confidence and clearly paints you as the life & soul of the party.
  • Be aware of Freshers' nights out and advertise to your housemates
If you become your housemate’s social calendar they’ll come and speak to you regularly and often
  • Play 21 Questions or Never Have I Ever
It's a great way to get to know your new housemates!
  • Go around knocking
The best way to break the ice is simply to go round and introduce yourself. It’s easy enough to do and people will appreciate the gesture
  • Offer to make people hot drinks
Another way to introduce yourself and start a conversation over a cuppa
  • Don’t be too full on
People will love your life of the party attitude but be aware that sometimes others might just want a bit of quiet time; moving to university is a big change and different people process changes in different ways.

Tips for Saving Money

It’s important to save money at University for the important things – in your case, going out. Here are some tips in order to boost your cash saving ability so you can hit the town more often

  • Look into becoming a Student Rep
Utilise your love of a good night out and turn it into a money making exercise by becoming a student rep for any number of clubs at you University. The advantages are twofold; discounts for you and your friends and more money to actually go out with!
  • Always pre-drink
Drinks are expensive on a night out, so a good pre-drinking session can go a long way to preserving your wallet whilst also providing the perfect opportunity to get to know your housemates better. Remember to drink responsibly
  • Never take your cards out with you
Always budget for a night out and only take that amount of cash out with you – never take your cards. That way you can’t tear through your bank balance and you won’t be tempted to wolf down some fatty foods on the way home.
  • Buy tickets in advance
Most clubs offer tickets in advance at cut rates. Invest early and reap the rewards of forward planning.
  • Have a few nights in every now and then
Remember that you don’t necessarily have to venture outside the front door in order to have an amazing time with your flatmates. Great fun can be had indoors – try a risqué board game or encourage a bake off to show that you can think outside the box.
