Prepare your vehicle for winter.
- Have your car fully serviced before winter starts.
- Make sure the washer bottle is filled with screenwash at the right level of concentration – this will prevent it from freezing.
- Check the tread and pressure on your tyres (including the spare!) and that your lights are clean and working.
- Pack some essential items in case of bad weather or an accident – warm blankets, high visibility jacket, working torch, first aid kit, emergency chocolate bar!
Before you leave…
- Check the weather conditions across your journey – if conditions are very bad consider if your journey is absolutely necessary.
- Factor in regular rest stops (every 2 hours) to get fresh air and hot drinks.
- Clear windows and mirrors completely of snow and ice before you drive away.
Whilst out…
- Remember to factor extra braking distance in relation to the weather conditions – for icy conditions you may need to allow for up to 10 times the normal braking distance!
- Reduce your speed smoothly, and avoid harsh braking or acceleration.
