New system helps young drivers avoid fines

Tue, 14 Mar 2006

Young Drivers in Scotland could avoid paying parking fines via a new text-based warning system.

The so-called Warden Watch allows drivers to warn other motorists that traffic wardens are in the area. So far, 40 motorists have signed up to the new system, reports the Scotsman.

Young Drivers who want to be involved can display a sticker in their window that has a special text number to alert them that they could be caught by an approaching parking inspector.

The initiative is the idea of entrepreneur Paul Johnson and came about because of increasing complaints of "overzealous" traffic wardens.

Mr Johnson, who also co-manages telecommunications company Think Big Group, said: "In no way are we encouraging drivers to break the law with this. But traffic wardens are incredibly overzealous these days and we have just had enough of this unfair treatment - and thousands and thousands of people are feeling the same way."
