Seasonal guide.

Freezing weather – preventing burst pipes

  • Make sure all pipes and tanks in the loft space are fully lagged.
  • Find your main stopcock and make sure you can turn it off and on.
  • Repair any dripping taps.
  • Check your loft insulation is thick enough and in good condition.
  • If you are going away, ensure that your heating is left on to maintain an air temperature of at least 5c.

Skiing and winter sports – some useful tips for your trip

  • Ensure you have all the equipment you need and that you have checked it for safety or arrange to hire some when you get there. And don’t forget things like warm clothing for afterwards and sunblock to protect your face.
  • Check transport details as there may be restrictions or extra costs on ski or snowboard equipment, especially if you are flying. Find out before you hit the airport.
  • While winter sports are fun, there are rules and regulations that apply to protect your safety and that of others. Find out what the rules are from your booking agent or resort and make sure everyone in your party understands them.

Looking after your car in the winter

  • When defrosting your car make sure you don’t leave it unattended with the keys in the ignition – thieves are on the look out and you will not be covered if your car is stolen!
  • Ensure your car is serviced regularly and remember to check the anti-freeze in your radiator.
  • Keep your lights clean and check the bulbs regularly.
  • Ensure your tyres are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure and have at least 3 mm of tread depth.
  • Check your wiper blades and replace if worn.
  • Think about what you might want to keep in the boot of your car, for example, a spare set of warm clothes, a blanket, first aid kit and torch, all may come in handy if you are stuck in bad weather.
